It’s been awhile since the DetroitSportsRag Investigative Team has provided an update on the debacle formerly known as Foster’s Smokehouse in Fraser, Michigan. But folks, we have Breaking News tonight.
For those new to this website and not fully immersed in the Smokehouse saga, here is the CliffNotes version.
Last year, Terry Foster and a business partner opened a restaurant/bar in Fraser named in honor of the imbecilic Detroit News writer. After months of hyping the place up on his blog and Tweeting about his new hangout, the joint opened on June 25th.
After a few disastrous months, Foster’s Smokehouse closed its doors for good on October 27th. The place only lasted ONLY 124 days in total from its “Soft Opening” and about a month after its official “Grand Opening.”
In that above-linked article on his grammatically-challenged blog, Foster wrote that he still had HUGE plans for his BBQ restaurant. Keep in mind this was posted on September 23rd:
33 days after the huge announcement of a Fosters’ BBQ connection with The D Las Vegas Casino, the joint crapped out and closed its doors forever.
The restaurant idea was a total clusterfuck that included a contractor not getting paid for hooking up the TVs, leading to a police report; the restaurant never having either food or customers; and an incredibly rude and dysfunctional waitstaff.
The Yelp! reviews were terrible (an average of 2 out of 5 stars) and, predictably, the establishment that opened during the summer couldn’t even make it to Halloween.
But even with all of this evidence that the place was a disaster of epic proportions, Foster remained indignant. Whenever anyone would needle him on social media about the closure, Foster would actually tell them that the place was a success. Seriously. On repeated occasions, Foster stated to anyone who would listen that a new home for the Smokehouse was imminent and to stay tuned for further developments.
Foster even claimed the place that lasted less than five months TURNED A PROFIT!!!!
And here is a Twitter conversation with a follower that clearly illustrates Foster’s either delusional or pathological thinking ….

@TerryFoster971 Looks good. Too bad the smoke house closed huh?

@ChubbynBearded we are in the process of moving. I was not sad about it — Terry Foster (@TerryFoster971) February 15, 2014
@TerryFoster971 Where? Seems like you’ve been “moving” for a while. If the food at the new place looks that good I’d like to pay a visit. — Tom Herman (@ChubbynBearded) February 15, 2014
@ChubbynBearded it looks like chesterfield twp. But I have nothing to do with that. Other folks are working on that
— Terry Foster (@TerryFoster971) February 16, 2014
@TerryFoster971 Most restaurants don’t turn a profit in their first year, yet yours was only open for 4 months and it was sold for a profit?
— Tom Herman (@ChubbynBearded) February 16, 2014
@ChubbynBearded it did not lose money. The owners are friends with the guy that owns the building. Wanted to move. Is that so wrong — Terry Foster (@TerryFoster971) February 16, 2014
@TerryFoster971 It looks bad to have your name on a business that’s been closed 3 months and claim to not be involved in the new locale. — Tom Herman (@ChubbynBearded) February 16, 2014
@ChubbynBearded what’s it matter to you?
— Terry Foster (@TerryFoster971) February 16, 2014
Anyway, it has now been 268 days since Foster’s closed for good and there has been absolutely zero news of a new location. Foster was lying , but, then again, that has happened before.
IF Foster and his partners were “bought out” and “made money,” I am guessing the Michigan Department of Treasury would LOVE to hear all about that since they slapped a lien on Foster’s Smoke House Inc. on July 14, 2014!!!!!!
Yep. The bar that was “sold for a profit” seems to owe the State of Michigan $9,094.14. Those poor, poor investors who bought a restaurant …. Oh fuck, I can’t even feign enough ignorance to finish that sentence.
Here is the actual “Notice of State Tax Lien” ……
So what does this all mean? I will let the Department of Treasury elaborate …..
The place didn’t turn a profit.
There will be no re-opening in a different location (unless Foster and his partners are going to pony up more than nine large to deal with this lien. Hahahahahaha).
Foster was caught AGAIN in another LIE. Not that anyone is shocked by ANY OF THIS, but now we have the smoking gun regarding the Smokehouse that never had an actual smoker.
Finally, according to the DSR’s crack legal team, if Foster played a management role, he could be personally liable for half of those taxes — related to their failure to withhold employment taxes — owed to the IRS and to the State of Michigan.
Oops.
