Detroit Media Rumors, Speculation and Innuendo

By Jeff Moss
December 13, 2013

The other day, I penned a lousy recap of the Tom “Killer” Kowalski Christmas party.  It wasn’t well-written.  It wasn’t that interesting.  I probably should never have published the piece of trash because it didn’t meet my high standards.

And ….. of course ….. it became one of the most-read articles I have written since my latest triumphant return to spewing hatred and vitriol via this platform.

Why did it get so many hits? Because you imbeciles seem to love anything written about the Detroit sports media.   You people really need to get a life™ (William Shatner).

Anyway, since the demand is so high and because I am a slut (foreshadowing) for unique page views, here is my Detroit ripoff version of Richard Deitsch’s “Media Circus” column.

“Coming up next … Herman Moore, M.L. Elrick and the public shaming of potential rape victims”

On December 5th, a prosecutor in Florida announced to the world that Florida State quarterback –and Heisman Trophy chalk — Jameis Winston would not be criminally prosecuted on a rape charge.

There is no need to go through all of the particulars here, but any neutral party reading the story of what did or did not occur on December 7, 2012 in that Tallahassee apartment could not totally exonerate the Seminoles’ signal-caller.

Even during Florida State Attorney Willie Meggs’ press conference last Thursday, the prosecutor continued to refer to the complainant as “the victim.”  Winston wasn’t charged with sexual assault because the prosecutor didn’t think he could convince a jury of the crime, not because he thought Winston was an innocent schoolboy.

Why am I bringing this up today? Because I was told by MULTIPLE sources that after the Winston press conference, Drew Lane and Marc Fellhauer went on the Detroit Sports 105.1 airwaves and started mocking the alleged victim.

Now, I wasn’t listening to the show so I can only go by the half-dozen listeners that I questioned about the pair’s behavior.  The truth is, I barely ever tune in unless Tony Paul is being interviewed about the Tigers.

Why? Well, let me put it this way.  I despise the “Bro Culture” that is constantly on display during the “Drew Lane Show.”  I fucking hate the frat-boy sensibility that Lane and Fellhauer perpetuate.

During my first week of college, I was approached by some fellow students who wanted me to rush Sigma Alpha Mu.  The Sammy fraternity (the OTHER Jewish one) was fairly new and I was told that I was basically guaranteed to get in — without even having to tolerate the asinine hazing process which gets some people killed.

I told the “recruiters” thanks, but no thanks.  I never wanted to be a member of a fraternity.  I can’t stomach any part of it.  From the buying friends aspect to the sleazy behavior to the Us vs. Them nature of the entire endeavor, I have always been skeeved out by the whole mentality.

And if I wasn’t going to join a frat in college and enjoy the fringe benefits — girls from an affiliated sorority being compelled to talk to me — I sure as hell want no part of Drew and Marc’s Greek-influenced radio program.

And from independent reports of “Drew Lane Show” listeners on December 5th, that fraternity behavior was at its all-time worst.

While discussing the prosecutor’s decision not to charge Winston, Drew and Marc repeatedly played a “whore” soundbite when mentioning the potential victim.   Can you imagine?!?!!!? There is a pretty decent chance this girl got RAPED and these two jackholes thought it was a wonderful time to call her a whore through drops!!!!!

If the “whore” resets weren’t bad enough, I was told that the potential victim was also referred to as a skank and a slut.  The typical Neanderthal  ‘the chick went back to his place so she knew he didn’t want to study’ take was also referenced.

Like every girl who goes back to a guy’s domicile is asking for the cock.

In this day and age, I can’t even comprehend that anyone would be so OUT OF TOUCH that they would behave in this manner.  And people wonder why more rape victims don’t report the assault to the police.

Maybe, just maybe … because if they do, one day they might be the target of a washed-up host’s drop computer on auto-pilot.  Because what’s funnier than RAPE?

Instead of this bro culture, lowest-common-denominator radio, Lane and Fellhauer could have picked up the phone and interviewed Julie DiCaro.

Who is Julie DiCaro? Well, she is a contributor who wrote a very thoughtful and personal article about the Winston case.  Oh, and by the way, she’s been a victim of rape.

But why bore your white-trash, barely-evolved audience with a reasoned discussion about sexual assault when you can humiliate potential victims with the names “whore,” “skank” and “slut”?

It is amazing to me how little control Bristol has when it comes to these ESPN Radio affiliates’ content.  I mean, we are talking about a network that suspended an anchor for thirty days when he innocently used the phrase “chink in the armor” when discussing Jeremy Lin.

Yet, in Detroit alone, ESPN Radio has been represented by a scumbag like Sima Birach, Jr., who allegedly was charging the credit cards of advertisers for spots that they didn’t buy, and by Drew Lane, who gets shits and giggles out of shaming potential rape victims.

In all fairness to the people at ESPN corporate, they are probably like the people in Detroit — not listening to the “Drew Lane Show.”

“I don’t know who that is”

The afternoon drive show at 105.1 wasn’t the only program on my radar this week as Lane’s lead-in caught my attention as well.

On Wednesday afternoon, Matt Dery was discussing the Tigers offseason maneuvers when he took a call from some idiot who didn’t believe that the Tigers are currently in budget-tightening mode.

Somehow this derelict thought that there was a connection between this website and Dery.  The caller obviously wasn’t aware that while Dery and I were once friendly, we had a major falling out a couple of years ago and aren’t on speaking terms.

So this hillbilly mentions a link between “The Diesel” and the DetroitSportsRag and Dery tells the caller that he has never heard of this website.

Never heard of the DSR?!?!!? What the fuck?!?!?!?

Matt, not only have you heard of the DSR, you used to be an active member of the DETROITSPORTSRAG FORUMS!!! How the hell can you lie through your teeth like that?

DSR? Never heard of it.  Oh, ok.  Then who were you sending these Direct Messages to on Twitter?

In that message to a guy he supposedly doesn’t know, Dery called former Free Press columnist Michael Rosenberg, “Rosenjew.”  This is unreal because the reason Dery and I had a falling out was due to the fact that he refused to defend me when his former colleague Terry Foster called me a racist on Twitter!!!!!

And why did Foster tell his 30,000 followers that I was a racist?

Because I had called Rosenberg, “Rosenheeb.”

You seriously cannot make this shit up!!!!!!

And here is another message from Dery commending me on a Terry Foster defunct-candy-store blast:

Well, maybe the guy doesn’t actually read my articles ….

And I have other emails and messages that are way more damning, but I am being charitable due to it being the holiday season.

Look, the next time a caller drops the DirtSpurt on the 105.1 frequency, don’t insult my intelligence and that of your audience by feigning ignorance.

Say my fucking name.

WDFN Isn’t Dead Yet

Based on the Arbitron ratings you’d be hard pressed to find someone out there who acknowledges that AM-1130 still considers itself a sports station, but Matt Shepard is still chugging along hosting a morning show to an audience of 12.

There has been speculation in the industry recently that Clear Channel would finally pull the plug on any last remnants of the first all-sports station in Motown.

The rumor was that 1130 would be switching to an all-political/news talk format anchored by Sean Hannity’s nationally-syndicated program.  The right-wing airbag is currently heard in Detroit on WJR.  Thankfully.

Anyway, Clear Channel has made the decision not to go this route.  For some reason, they don’t want to give up their national Fox Sports clearance.

So the status quo will remain at WDFN and I wish I could tell you what that was, but I haven’t listened to that station since Tom Kowalski died.

The Rumor Mill

Over the last week or so, I have been working my sources to find out what the long-range plan is for 105.1.  If there is one.

I have discussed this topic with a longtime Greater Media employee, with an on-air talent and with others who cover this beat in Detroit.  This is what I have learned:

    • Greater Media has always treated 105.1 as their “bastard child” while showing favoritism toward WCSX and WRIF.  Management has never made 105.1 a priority and it still isn’t.
    • Part of Greater Media’s strategy when flipping WMGC-FM from adult contemporary to sports was to almost use 105.1 as a “pick.”  The brass figured Detroit Sports 105.1 would eat away at 97.1’s massive audience, which would benefit 94.7 and 101.1.
    • The management at Greater Media consists of a bunch of old men who do not have the killer instinct to take WXYT-FM on in head-to-head fashion.
    • The real reason Mike Clark didn’t join Drew Lane had nothing to do with Clark’s lack of sports knowledge.  It was purely a financial decision.
    • Greater Media doesn’t have any interest in the broadcast rights to the Red Wings, Pistons or Lions.  If they target any of the local teams it will be the Tigers and that contract isn’t up for another couple of years.
    • There are no immediate plans to add more local programming.
    • Greater Media’s master plan is to attract Bob Wojnowski away from 97.1, but Wojo’s contract isn’t up for another two years either.

In other words, the mess that is currently Detroit Sports 105.1 isn’t going to get any better in the near future.

It looks like they are going to get raped by 97.1 in the ratings for the foreseeable future.
