The death knell of Detroit Sports 105.1 has not stopped the Detroit radio rumors from percolating. In fact, in the past few days I have felt like former New York Post “Page 6” writer Richard Johnson rifling through all of the various tips.
And now there is enough speculation and innuendo to fill an entire Detroit sports media related article.
Enjoy the gossip because this shit is good …
When Will They Be Installing an Octagon at the 97.1 Studios?
You would think that everything would be going swimmingly over at CBS Radio’s sports property “The Ticket” after recent events. The station’s “rival” had been in the process of going belly-up over the last couple of months. Longtime hosts Mike Valenti and Michael Stone re-upped with lucrative contracts. And the Tigers and Red Wings signed a long-term deal to remain at 97.1 last fall.
But from what I have been told by multiples sources in the past few days, not everything is copacetic at the station and there have been serious personality issues between on-air staff. Both of these purported incidents involve Valenti.
The first occurred between Valenti and his longtime radio partner Terry Foster. Apparently, Valenti was pissed that Foster was being lazy and not doing any show prep. This has been a constant issue between the two for years. Matt Dery used to tell the DSR that Valenti could not stand Foster’s lack of dedication to the program. And this dates back when Dery was the pair’s update guy.
Anyway, for some reason, this issue really boiled over recently with the two getting into an extremely loud shouting match in the studio. I have been told that Valenti dropped the “you are nothing without me” nuke.
It’s hard to feel sorry for Valenti. He handpicked Foster as his radio partner long ago because he wanted a dumb Alan Colmes-esque punching bag in the studio with him and not someone with a modicum of intelligence and the potential to make the thin-skinned and insecure Valenti look stupid.
And while that tidbit was predictable, the other Valenti rumor is quite bizarre. Now, I am still attempting to get corroboration regarding the facts of this situation but I have been told that Valenti and Bill McAllister got into a fistfight at the station.
Why did the AM and PM drive hosts come to blows at the studio? I am still working on getting more details on this alleged incident but, in the past, Valenti has taken shots at McAllister’s lack of sports knowledge during his program. Is that what caused two grown men to punch each other in the workplace?
Stay tuned ….
Did a Local Businessman Almost Save Detroit Sports 105.1?
According to my sources, before Greater Media decided to flip WMGC from an all-sports channel to their current radio edit hip-hop format, they were in discussions with a local businessman who wanted to purchase the existing ESPN affiliate.
Apparently, the East Coast based media conglomerate and the Detroit entrepreneur could not agree on a price and the deal fell through. This would explain why Greater Media went a couple of months without either a program director or a sales staff.
And while it doesn’t appear that the mystery local businessman is interested in starting a sports station from scratch, I have heard buzz that more local sports talk programming might be on the way. More on that story next week ….
Blind Item — And Trust Me, You Want It That Way
What Detroit sports media member has been sending unsolicited dick pictures to girls on Twitter? Let’s just say, if I spill the beans, you might vomit profusely.
The gentleman in question was recently pink-slipped and has a definite hard-on for Sparty, though.
Gregg Henson Goes Off On Detroit Sports 105.1
Former WDFN and WXYT program director Gregg Henson took to social media and to Ryan Schuiling’s show in Lansing today and discussed how currently unemployed staff members at Detroit Sports 105.1 badmouthed him when there was speculation he might replace Dave Shore as program director at the flailing station.
So who was Henson talking about? Well, the initial on his potential candidacy occurred while Dery was still at the station. Both Ratt Dreary and his agent Mort Meisner talked shit behind the scenes about Henson in an effort to convince Greater Media to treat Henson like the plague.
After the Weasel was let go by 105.1 in March, the next station employee to badmouth Henson was Tom “The Concierge” Mazawey, who bitched to higher-ups that Henson had been on the DSR Podcast when I called Mazawey to inquire about his personal grocery shopping services.
Like, I was just trying to make Mazawey some extra cash on the side. I am not sure why he was so offended…
The other person who apparently would have rather been making visits to the unemployment office instead of having a competent boss was some Drew Lane lackey named Joey Morasso who supposedly was a call-screener at 105.1.
This NOBODY cunt was bragging to people in the Ferndale compound that if Henson got hired, he was going to call him a “piece of shit” to his face because of Gregg’s association with ME.
These dumbfuck Lane enablers are the best. From Marc Fellhauer to Michael Elrick to this dipshit “Joey.” I actually kind of feel bad for Lane because whenever these flunkies piss me off, I end up taking it out on Lane.
…Which will happen in this space next week when I post another hilarious article about the foibles of Drew Lane. Stay tuned, “Joey.”
You piece of shit.
So while these douche bags will probably never get a radio gig in Detroit again, Henson is still gainfully employed as a PD in Pittsburgh and if I were a betting man (and I am) ….
I’d wager that you will hear Henson back on the local airwaves before Fatone/Tribbiani/Ramone gets another gig ANSWERING PHONE CALLS. Ya know, a job you could train a monkey to do.
And Finally ….
