After that dunce Tom Mazawey made national news for his insensitive remarks about a woman’s culpability in her own sexual assault over the weekend, you’d think Detroit Sports 105.1 staff members would be walking on eggshells so as not to offend the one or two females who still listen to the station.
If you did have that line of thought, you’d have been dead wrong as 105.1 continued in its mission to eradicate anyone with XX chromosomes. On Tuesday morning — just one show after his “expect to get raped if you go back to a man’s dorm room at 2am” rant — Mazawey once again inserted his foot in his mouth regarding females.
In a discussion over ESPN personality Chris Berman’s potentially forced partial retirement, Mazawey blamed the WOMEN at the Worldwide Leader. Here is audio of that discussion:
And here is the transcript of the discussion between Mazawey and his broadcast partners Marc Fellhauer and Sean Baligian:
Fellhauer: They’re pushing him out. They don’t have the money to pay anybody anymore.
Mazawey: He’s not a woman.
Fellhauer: What?
Baligian: Awww, jeeeez. (Sounds like the smack of a table.)
“He’s not a woman.” What in the holy world of fuck does that even mean? He’s not a woman?
Does this absolute fool believe the reason ESPN has let high-priced MALE talent like Bill Simmons, Keith Olbermann, Colin Cowherd and Skip Bayless walk is because of the huge amounts of cash they are doling out to Linda Cohn, Michelle Beadle and Jemele Hill??????
I am not sure if it is more embarrassing that Mazawey works for an ESPN(!!!!!!) radio station and doesn’t understand the economics of why ESPN (!!!!!!) is cutting costs, or that he is a male chauvinist pig.
The reason that ESPN is slashing payroll is because they are hemorrhaging subscribers and are terrified that a la carte programming could be in the future, meaning 87-year-old grandmas (or grandpas, for that matter) might not pony up the required $6.04 for ESPN.
You ignoramus. You dummy.
But no, go right ahead and blame Berman’s departure on the “exorbitant” salaries of Hannah Storm and Lisa Salters.
But the Greater Media sports property wasn’t finished offending “chicks” for the week.
Now, I am not easily offended. And I have done shit on this website that probably wouldn’t get the stamp of approval of either Gloria Steinem or Janeane Garofalo. Look, what I am trying to tell you is that I am no saint.
But, in the year 2016, how can an FM radio station run a bit where they refer to females as “skirts”? And how tone-deaf do you have to be to run a segment belittling women when you are on the national radar for blaming sexual assault victims for their own tragedy?
When I asked the following question on Twitter …
… it was “liked” by Detroit News University of Michigan beat writer (and extremely nice person) Angelique Chengelis and the assistant executive producer of the “Howard Stern Show”, Jason Kaplan.
Yes, a guy who helps to program a radio show that plays a game where contestants have to guess if a mentally-challenged dwarf named Beetlejuice can identify either Batman or HIMSELF in a photograph was offended by this.
And by the time Red Wings analytics guru Prashanth Iyer shared the WMGC-FM Tweet with his followers we were off to the races with rampant criticism of the segment.
And then Sports Illustrated editor Emma Span chimed in …..
What a dagger. By the middle of the afternoon Baligian had decided to bury the “Skirts on Sports” segment for good.
I give Baligian a lot of credit here for addressing the criticism that was coming from several female voices. Not only did he apologize, but he killed the segment. Even though I believe he probably could have just changed its name and a lot of the vitriol would have gone away.
But because of Mazawey’s idiocy, Baligian probably didn’t feel like he had that luxury. And keep in mind, we are still waiting for Mazawey’s apology.
I have gone back and forth with Greater Media Vice President Buzz Knight over the last couple weeks via email as I have graciously offered my services to the station’s executive. I am hoping to have lunch with him soon and explain some of my thoughts on his failing sports talker.
This assistance was on the house. Now do something about Mazawey.
