Do You Still Doubt Connor Cook Fell In Draft Because of His Dad?

As always seems to be the case when the DSR breaks news, we took a lot of crap last week when we exposed the disgusting Tweets from Connor Cook’s father’s Twitter account. Because this site is so controversial in Detroit, it’s always a game of “Kill the Messenger” whenever we break a story like Chris Cook calling Rachel Maddow a “homely dike.”

So when I was attacked by readers of the article either in the comments section under my post or in that cesspool known as the Red Cedar Message Board, it was entirely predictable.

I was accused of having a left-wing agenda because sending homophobic blasts and wishing death on a civil rights leader is surely a partisan issue.

Then came the angle that this was some sort of Michigan/Michigan State saga. Sorry, everything in the world doesn’t revolve around your boring in-state collegiate civil war. I don’t give a rat’s ass about the Wolverines and Spartans and I only address either program when there is a media-related issue involved.

The one peculiar and repetitive criticism of the original article was that, even if you believed Chris Cook was a virulent scumbag, there was absolutely no connection between the dad’s behavior and Connor’s precipitous fall in the draft.

I was bombed for this repeatedly as if we were making such a huge leap of faith with that take.

Now, keep in mind that former DSR managing editor Justin Spiro had been told by his national source that Chris Cook severely impacted Connor’s draft viability with his behavior. And that was BEFORE we found the abhorrent social media missives.

I could literally post dozens of messages from dolts who doubted that Connor’s dad’s behavior could impact how NFL teams viewed Connor but here is just a sampling ….

This is the same head-in-the-sand ostrich approach that led Sparty Nation to attack Detroit News writer Josh Katzenstein, which was the genesis of Chris Cook landing on our radar.

So I figured I would update you people with a few articles that have been posted subsequent to our original story going viral through DeadspinThe Big Lead and Bar Stool Sports among others.

This from a little website called Sports Illustrated’s Monday Morning Quarterback:

Yep. This was one big conspiracy perpetuated by the media. Just ask Graham CouchJoe Rexrode and their fellow MSU slapdick brethren.

I want to make a final point about this topic. One that involves  MSU head coach Mark Dantonio. Here is a subtweet directed at Katzenstein from May 3rd:

Hashtag gossip “column”? For Dantonio to attack Katzenstein’s journalistic credibility when Dantonio knew firsthand  that EVERYTHING referenced in Josh’s article was true is deplorable.

In fact, NOBODY IN THE WORLD knew about the issues with Connor and his dad better than Dantonio.

Furthermore, when Dantonio discovered that Connor was returning for his senior season instead of entering the 2015 NFL Draft, Dantonio made a comment (that trickled back to me) to some reporters wondering if the MSU coach could get him to reconsider his decision.

Because as great a QB as Connor Cook was for MSU — as that 35-5 record would attest — that’s what a giant pain in the ass the FAMILY was to the program.

Poor Josh KatzenBaruchattatadoniaelohaynumelachhaolamnStein …

Talk about Hashtag Disrespek.
