The Website That Must Not Be Named

Back when I first read the above Tweet a couple years back, I had never read a “Harry Potter” book or watched a minute of the movies that were produced based on those novels.  So when Detroit News columnist John Niyo nicknamed me “Voldemort,” I had to go to Wikipedia to find out what he was referencing ….

In the series, Voldemort is the archenemy of Harry Potter, who according to a prophecy has “the power to vanquish the Dark Lord”. Almost no witch or wizard dares to speak his name, instead referring to him by epithets such as “You-Know-Who”, “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named” or “the Dark Lord”.

And it made perfect sense. Especially the “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named” reset since members of the mainstream Detroit media almost unilaterally refuse to mention the name Joff Must (or the DetroitSportsRag.com for that matter).

But here is the thing. It’s getting more difficult by the day to ignore this website. We are either breaking news (the Jim Harbaugh stuff); crafting viral investigative work (the Drew Sharp plagiarism scandal); reporting news that gets stolen by other outlets even if the eventual story changes (Brad Ausmus’ alleged firing); or pulling various shenanigans (the Sour Shoes pranks).

And now we are at the point of creating content when we aren’t even trying to do so. On Friday night, DSR managing editor Justin Spiro attended the Pistons game against the Cavs and ended up being part of the game story.

Spiro never thought suggesting to Andre Drummond that the center shoot free-throws underhand would lead the All-Star to verbally threaten physical harm on this site’s #2 or that it would take Reggie Jackson to restrain Drummond from assaulting Gyro at the end of the game.

Hell, his OWN coach referenced the retro shooting technique just days earlier.

It was all psychotic behavior on Drummond’s part and not some calculated plan for the DSR to get attention. Trust me, if Spiro were looking for content, he would have been Periscoping the entire ordeal.

And if you want a classic example of how the terrified Detroit sports media treats the DSR, I give you the Twitter timeline of CBS Detroit writer Ashley Scoby

“Wouldn’t have even tweeted the quote” if she knew the person involved was a writer for the DSR? Can you imagine?!?!?!?

The Pistons’ best player had to be restrained from entering the stands and going all Ron Artest and the team’s coach COMMENTED on the situation in a press conference but, because a contributor to this site was involved, Scoby wouldn’t have REPORTED it.

This woman is an alleged REPORTER. I guess she wouldn’t have written about the San Bernardino shooting because those terrorists were real meanies!!!!!

I mean, EVERYONE covering that game knew it was Spiro “mixing it up” with Drummond, from Vince Ellis to Dave Hogg to, eventually, Scoby. Did one of these so-called JOURNALISTS contact him to get his side of the story??

Nope. Because of his association with this joint. Hilarious.

And because of that, everyone misreported what had occurred. Especially Aaron McCann of MLive.com, who couldn’t even correctly recall what Spiro was wearing.

Does that look like a JERSEY to you or a really ugly coat?

Oh, and if you think I am over-exaggerating how media entities treat this website, here is a timely Tweet from WWJ950‘s Russ McNamara …

Back in the old days of the site, I could almost understand why the newspapers and radio stations didn’t want to give us any publicity. But it’s been 13 years now and we aren’t exactly flying under the radar any longer.

But keep acting like we don’t exist. It’s your credibility that’s taking a hit, not ours.
