Vincent Goodwill Can Now Shill in Peace

It’s been a good month for Detroit sports fans who own discerning taste. We have seen the exit of Josh Smith, Don Kelly, Dominic Raiola and now Detroit News Pistons beat writer Vincent Goodwill. We are a Johan Franzen retirement announcement away from utter euphoria.

The departure of Goodwill is absolutely hilarious in its timing. It comes on the heels of the sneaker aficionado getting chewed out by Stan Van Gundy over his ridiculous assertion that the Josh Smith clusterfuck was somehow the new management’s fault and not Joe Dumars’ Little Bighorn.

Since Vincent Goodwill, JUNIOR replaced Chris “Officer Barbrady” McCosky on the Pistons beat a few years ago, the Eastern Michigan product earned the label of team shill for all of his fluffing of the Dumars regime. While McCosky just lazily regurgitated the company line, Goodwill one-upped Debbie Downer by openly propagandizing for Joe D.

It got so bad that I asked on this website earlier this month if there was a beat writer in Detroit worse than Goodwill. Turns out …. there was not.

Vinny’s pandering act was so bad that he earned himself the nickname of GoodSHILL. The moniker became so prevalent among Pistons fans that a Twitter user capitalized on it by creating a parody account that drove the real Goodwill insane.

Well, it would appear that Goodwill found himself a new gig where shilling is ENCOURAGED instead of mocked. Junior is exiting the News for Chicago’s Comcast Sports Network where he will cover the Bulls.

Who owns CSN? Well … Comcast, the Cubs and Blackhawks all share twenty percent apiece.

Who has the other forty percent? Jerry Reinsdorf. The OWNER of the White Sox…and the Bulls!!!

I mean, did CSN management run a Google search for “biggest NBA team shill” and Vinny’s name popped up? If so, I probably should receive a thank-you card for his new gig.

And, make no mistake about it, there is very little autonomy when working for an outfit like this. I have been told HORRIFIC stories by journalists across the country who work for local Fox Sports websites.

Even if you can get team critical copy past the local Gestapo, the folks in Los Angeles will crush any hint of negativity at the national level. It is so bad that one scribe told me that he/she just stopped writing anything even remotely cynical because there was no chance it was getting posted.

That’s the atmosphere Goodwill is entering with CSN. Although, based on his past behavior, it is very doubtful he will care about restrictions that aren’t even applicable to his brand of “journalism.” Hell, I wonder how long Goodwill has known he is leaving Detroit for Chicago. My guess? December 6th.
