The first round of the DSR’s Worst Detroit Sports Media Personality Tournament is now complete and we are ready to commence the second round. There weren’t many upsets in the first round as most of the chalk walked away with easy victories.

The most interesting Round 1 development was the elimination of 2011 “Fucked-Up Four” finalist Jeff Riger of WXYT-FM. When we initially ran this tourney, Riger was a #3 seed coming off some terrible blog posts about Jim Leyland and his now-infamous take that Tomas Holmstrom had a better Red Wings career than Sergei Fedorov.

Riger has improved over the last couple of years — either that, or everyone has gotten worse — and he is one of the few Detroit media members who will ask tough questions. That improvement earned him a #8 seed and a first-round battle with fellow 97.1 overnight janitorial staff member Dan Leach.

Leach destroyed Riger in that head-to-head battle on the strength of his horrible Twitter timeline and his seemingly coked up Tout updates. (Nobody is alleging that Leach is using cocaine, but he has to be on something, even if it is just a combination of Red Bull and 5-Hour Energy Drinks. NOBOY Has that much energy at 3am.)

The second-round battle of Leach vs. Drew Lane will be interesting. The dumbass, homophobic 105.1 radio host who got anally raped live on the air the other day, or the guy who seems like a “Saturday Night Live” caricature of a bad sports radio host.

Meanwhile, the most anticipated second-round match is a battle of two of the worst beat writers in town, Vince Ellis vs. Matthew B. Mowery. This should be an epic battle between two non-critical cheerleaders. Let’s go to the video for a preview of this battle ….

Anyway, we will decide the Eric Pate and Copernicus Memorial Regions today and the Sima Birach, Jr. and Danny Knobler brackets on Saturday.

Good luck to all of the remaining participants in their efforts to avoid the “Shitty 16.”
