I was thinking over some of Vincent Goodshill’s more egregious errors today after his name came up in the Worst Detroit Sports Media Member Tournament. One item that stood out to me was his comment during the game against the Jazz that the attendance wasn’t that much higher than it would be for a typical Friday night game.
Here’s the Tweet in question:
@scottyb1972 umm, there’s been no real uptick compared to their usual Friday night games.

That seemed wrong to me, because I have watched a lot of Pistons games this year and there was a noticeably larger crowd that night. Well, here are the stats, courtesy of basketball-reference.com box scores.
Average attendance at Friday night games other than Utah: 14,335
Attendance for the Utah game: 18,528.
I guess an uptick of 30% isn’t that much to Goodshill.
For the season, the Utah game had the second-highest attendance after opening night, and is one of three games to top 18,000 for the season — the third being Miami. In fact, only five games out of 24 have even topped 16,000.
Let’s assume that the attendance for this game was inflated by 2,000 fans due to it being Burke’s only appearance in Detroit. That’s still enough to take the Pistons from 27th in the league in attendance to 20th. It also takes the arena from 2/3 full to 3/4, which may not sound significant but it would certainly show better on TV.
