[Editor’s Note: After a one-year hiatus, the DSR has revived our year-end awards given out to the Detroit Media. Instead of one long article presenting all of the recipients at once, we will be rolling these out over the next few days. And yes, the Raggie Trophy is a Detroit snow globe, a “Made in Detroit” coffee cozy and one of Moss’s wife’s unused tampons.]
Best TV Broadcast Team
George Blaha and Greg Kelser — Fox Sports Detroit
The Pistons announcing crew gets the nod for this Raggie due to both a dearth of competition and Greg Kelser’s superior broadcasting skills.
The former Michigan State standout calls it like he sees it; he isn’t a cheerleader for the Pistons and he provides quality insight. The only Detroit color commentator who is comparable in skill is Dan Petry, and he can’t get a gig in this pathetic city.
The 68-year-old Blaha hasn’t changed much over the decades and still is fairly entertaining. Although, the committee cannot believe he is only 68. Hasn’t he been calling the Pistons games since they were playing in Fort Wayne? When we looked up his age on Wikipedia, we were guessing the dude was in his early to mid-seventies.
The one complaint we have with Blaha is that his brain seems to be working on a seven second delay. If the play-by-play announcer continues on this trajectory, it is just a matter of time before the opposing team scores a basket while Blaha is still describing a Pistons score.
It’s been a pretty good week for the Spartan pair. First, their team won the Rose Bowl, and now they take home the prestigious Raggie Award.
